To some people, the whole area of trade processing represents the less glamorous side of the securities industry. However, without the efficient management of trade throughout its lifecycle, much of the benefits from trade could be lost.

It may take a split second to make a trade, but it can take a lot of effort and support to settle that trade. Each trade transacted in the financial markets requires processing and monitoring while live and until any settlement has been made and accounted for. The cost of settlement failure can be substantial for firms, both from a profit point of view and the reputational risk to firms.

The clearing and settlement of derivatives have been the focus of many regulators since the financial crisis. The clearing of derivatives is gradually moving to recognized clearinghouses.

This course describes the lifecycle of trades in the financial and derivatives markets, from the time of purchase to the settlement date. It details the key steps required to process trades as they progress through a typical trade lifecycle.
